- Use your real experiences when reflecting on decisions and responsibilities.
- Practise listening as well as speaking.
- Check assessment instructions through the official channel for your entry.
Start with your own experiences
Write a short account of your education, interests, responsibilities and decisions. Think about situations in which you worked with others, changed your approach or learned from a mistake.
Focus on what actually happened and your part in it. Reflection should help you understand your experience; it should not turn into a script that makes every story sound artificially impressive.
Practise clear, ordinary communication
Choose a familiar topic and explain it to another person in a few minutes. Ask which point was clear and which part needed more context.
Practise answering the question asked instead of delivering a memorised speech. If you do not know something, acknowledge that honestly.
Reading, discussion and thoughtful listening can give you more substance to communicate, but there is no single speaking style that guarantees a result.

Learn to contribute in a group
In a practice discussion, aim to move the conversation forward with a relevant point, a useful question or a clear summary. Listen to competing views before responding.
Notice whether you repeat yourself, interrupt or withdraw too early. Feedback is most useful when it describes observable behaviour rather than attaching a label to your personality.
Agree on one small behaviour to practise in the next discussion.
Use feedback without manufacturing a persona
Ask a mentor what they observed and why a different approach might be useful. Separate practical communication habits from claims that everyone must behave identically.
Work on the parts you understand and can apply honestly. Interview practice should develop clarity about your own background and choices.
It should not involve inventing achievements, concealing relevant facts or learning stories that are not yours.
Plan the practical side of the assessment
Read your official call letter and instructions, confirm reporting requirements and prepare the required documents. Follow official guidance for the assessment and any later stages.
Build an ordinary routine that supports focused preparation and rest. On this website, SSB guidance is a proposed pathway; session format, mentors, availability and inclusions will be confirmed by the academy before enrolment.
